Accommodation - What is it like to live on the Sussex Coast?

William Blackburn13 Sep 2017

There are so many factors to take into considering flight training, such as location, pricing and fleet of aircraft. However, accommodation is another commodity that is just as important when it comes to finding the right school for you. According to Maslow's famed hierarchy of needs, accommodation comes under part of one's 'Physiological needs', which are the basic needs that form the base of the pyramid. It is from here that other things such as self esteem, belongingness and safety are built upon and therefore plays an integral role in providing well being for students.

Where to start?

At FTA, we are privileged to be based on the South Coast of England, which lends itself to a wide array of stunning and beautiful scenery. Located in West Sussex and around 20 minutes from Brighton, Brighton City Airport is set in an ideal situation for training.

With the neighbouring towns of Hove, Worthing, Lancing and Shoreham itself being no more than a mere bus journey away, we have worked closely with the local community to provide a database of host families that will meet all of your needs. These properties are reviewed by our Student Welfare Manager and are then added to our portfolio, ready for you to peruse.

See below for some more information regarding the different locations:

HOVE

Hove is a town that is situated immediately to the west of Brighton and is a location that offers plenty of activities. Being based adjacent to the seafront, places like Hove Lagoon provide ample opportunity to participate in various different water sport activities. The 1st Central County Ground and the i360 also form part of the attractions in Hove and with plenty of supermarkets and shops, you will never be bored of things to do.

Pricing:

To stay in Hove with one of our host families, you will be looking for a budget of around £550 - £650 per calender month. This can include preparation of meals on request with certain hosts, however this is something that can be more specifically negotiated with the home owner on initial request.

By Train - Southern Rail offer a direct link to Shoreham Station from Hove. The train journey will take you 10 minutes and from Shoreham Station, it will then be a further 10 minute walk to the Airport. For Students aged between 18 and 25, it is also worth mentioning that you will be entitled to up to 1/3 off your rail journey with a Student Railcard. These are available from the following website: https://www.16-25railcard.co.uk/

By Bus - The number 700 runs from Hove every 10 minutes and this then follows the Coast road into Shoreham. From the bus stop, it will be approximately a 10 minute walk to the Airport. Stagecoach currently offer Megarider tickets for their service and is definitely a cost effective way to travel on the bus if you are intending to use the service frequently.

If you're a keen walker or cyclist, the wide open promenade along the seafront provides for ample opportunity to take in majestic views of the seaside. For something different, there is also an Iron Age hill-fort at Cissbury Ring, where you can spot wild ponies.

SHOREHAM

Shoreham is the area that has been most synonymous with the Airport and its over century long history. A picturesque town, Shoreham has also had just as much of a long association with the maritime industry as well as with the aviation sector, with its famous port providing a mainstay industry for the town.

With numerous quaint pubs and shops, Shoreham has been a firm favourite of our students' over the past 11 years of our operation at FTA. The town is also home to the renowned, multi-award winning Ropetackle Arts Centre, where there are quite often various Comedy and Variety shows taking place.

Again similarly to Lancing, Shoreham is very close to the Airport and is easily accessible by walking distance. There is a cut through via the Adur Recreation Ground, that can be reached after crossing the Norfolk Bridge. From here, it is no more than a 5 minute walk to the Airport.

LANCING

Lancing is a village that forms part of the Adur District of West Sussex and is also the home to our beautiful Brighton City Airport. With the lush rolling hills of the South Downs National Park forming a staple part of the countryside and rustic architecture of places like Lancing College (which has featured in the film version for Brideshead Revisited), Lancing is an idyllic location to be based in.

As with the other locations featuring in this article, Lancing boasts an expansive walkway along the seafront, which is also the home to Beach Fit Gym. This is the perfect place to go to do your workout, with the stunning backdrop of the ocean providing some fantastic views.

Perhaps the most ideal part about living in Lancing is the fact that the Airport is located so close by, meaning that it can literally only be walking distance from your home. If you are walking from Lancing, you can access the Airport via the New Salts Farm Road.
