Setting off to a flying start: Yousaf

William Blackburn06 Sep 2017

Another student currently taking advantage of the fantastic facilities at our Satellite Campus in Teruel is Yousaf Nasar. Along with Aman, Yousaf has also recently completed his first Progress Test and is well on his way to completing the third phase of his training, before coming back to Brighton City Airport to complete his ATPL Theory exams. We spent some time with Yousaf to talk about his training so far:

WHEN DID YOU ARRIVE TO THE BASE IN SPAIN AND HOW MANY FLIGHTS HAVE YOU COMPLETED SINCE?

I arrived in Teruel on the 15th July 2017 and commenced flying with FTA on the 18th July 2017. I have successfully completed 49 flights so far, with a mixture of both dual and solo flights.

I felt completely prepared and confident as we had a very talented, experienced, professional and friendly instructor

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO FLY THE ELEMENTARY FLIGHT PHASES FROM A BASE WITH SUCH GOOD WEATHER?

The weather in Teruel is absolutely outstanding and very desirable to be flying in as it allows us to complete two flights each day. As there are currently only two of us in Spain at the moment, we get to have an aircraft each which has been fantastic!

HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WERE GETTING CLOSE TO YOUR FIRST PROGRESS TEST?

As I got closer to my PT1 I was definitely feeling nervous as it was the first Progress Test in my training but at the same time I felt completely prepared and confident as we had a very talented, experienced, professional and friendly instructor.

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE TEST. WHAT WAS THE TEST PROFILE, TELL US ABOUT THE MANOEUVERES YOU HAD TO DO, EMERGENCIES, NAVIGATION, DIVERSION?

The PT1 itself consisted of various types of manoeuvres, including:

Pre-flight inspections

Passenger Brief

Departure Brief

Checks on each phase (taxi checks, power checks, take off checks etc)

Engine failure after take off (EFATO)

Navigation

Diversions

Emergency landing over a field

Glide approaches

Flapless approaches

Precision approaches

HOW DID YOU FEEL AFTER THE TEST? TELL US ABOUT THE RESULT

The PT1 was conducted very professionally. I was kept in suspense for the next 2 hours to see if I had passed or not because I took my exam first. Once I had received the result, it felt like an amazing achievement for sure!
